This past Friday evening Bishop Loverde visited our parish and confirmed seventy of our brothers and sisters. Having received the Sacrament of Confirmation they will be permitted to be a Godparent, become a Confirmation Sponsor, be wed in Holy Matrimony, make vows as a Nun or be ordained a Priest. On those occasions they will make a promise before the entire Church to help another soul get to heaven.

They have been "clothed with power from on high", which is what happened to the Apostles at Pentecost. They have for a long time received Sacramental Grace for the sake of their own salvation. Now they are instruments of God for the salvation of others.

As mature Christians, as soldiers of Christ, we engage in the mission of the Church, which is to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them all that [He] has taught us." We are entrusted with continuing Christ's work. It is a great privilege and responsibility. We actually will be held accountable for how we make it easier or harder for other people to get to heaven.

Pray then that we all may be renewed in the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Breathe in us, O Holy Spirit, that all our thoughts may be holy.
Act in us, O Holy Spirit, that all our work too may be holy.
Draw our hearts, O Holy Spirit, that we love but what is holy.
Strengthen us, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.
Guard us then, O Holy Spirit, that we always may be holy.

God bless all of us.
