Cauwe is a name that has been appropriately memorialized at St. John the Beloved. The plaque on the back of the church and the likeness of Fr. Paul R. Cauwe, C.I.C.M, adorning the entrance of the hall named after him remind us of the first official pastor of this parish.

Fifty years ago, however, Fr. Cauwe was celebrating the 50th Anniversary of St. John's.

His two predecessors whom he was honoring had even more exotic names:

  • Rev. Amadeus J. Van Ingelgem (1913-1931)
  • Rev. Edward V. Mullarkey (1931-1951)

They had pastoral care of St. John by virtue of being pastors of St. James in Falls Church. While Bishop Peter L. Ireton laid the cornerstone for the church where we still celebrate the sacred mysteries, it was Bishop Denis J. O'Connell who did so for our original church (now Carlin Hall) on 21 September 1913.

The Carlins and Peytons, who helped establish the Mission of St. John, would be please to see the number of dedicated families that keep the mission of the Church alive and well on this hill that used to be known as simply as El Nido, which means "The Nest".

We have lots to celebrate next weekend. Fr. Thompson is going to fire up his six-string and I will stoke the smokers. Bishop Loverde will come join the party on Saturday evening and Fr. Daly will preach to us on Sunday afternoon. The Centennial Celebration promises to be an event to remember. Be sure to come and invite your friends and even your enemies!

God bless you.
