About Us

For years the Thrift Shop has served as an apostolate of the parish providing decent clothes at low prices. It serves people both in our parish and beyond. The thrift shop is located on the lower level of Carlin Hall beneath the parish offices. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.. We are closed during the months of July and August. Donations are accepted during these hours only and again on Mondays from 9:30 a.m. until Noon. Volunteers are always needed to help run the shop. The Thrift Shop generously contributes proceeds to the parish. Excess goods go to various charities throughout Northern Virginia and Washington, DC. Call 703-356-7420 for more information.

History

In the early 1960's the mothers of St. John students started a uniform exchange program in the school to reduce the cost of providing new uniforms for the children as they out grew their current ones.

Eventually they started taking in other items on consignment, as some of the women had been involved in with these shops during overseas assignments with their husbands. The items would remain on consignment for sixty days after which the owners could claim them or donate them to the shop. Those items became the property of the shop and thus started the thrift shop. Additional items were donated to the shop and it relocated to the space of the old church that is now the parish offices.

The shop flourished off and on for a number of years as a religious goods store as well as a thrift and consignment store. With the renovation of the old church and the relocation of the parish offices to its new location, the shop was moved to the basement of Carlin Hall where it still resides.

The new space is much smaller than the upstairs space and there was no longer room for the consignment area. The establishment of "the Word" in the vestibule of the church transferred the selling of religious items and books there.

The Thrift Shop still thrives thanks to the generosity of our volunteers and the donations of our parishioners.

All of the proceeds of the shop go to the parish or some other worthy catholic charity; i.e. the Institute for Catholic Culture; St. Christopher's Inn Garrison NY, Father McKenna's homeless Shelter in D.C.. The excess items are donated to various organizations to help others; i.e. Goodwill; the Old soldiers Home; The Salvation Army; we have also donated good to drives for clothing to Africa, Iraq.

Closed during the months of JULY AND AUGUST.
