Significant Milestones

1913
St. John’s Mission Church established in El Nido and served by Rev. Amadeus J. Van Ingelgem, pastor at St. James.
1931
Rev. Edward V. Mullarkey assigned as pastor of St. James and St. John’s Mission (1931-1951).
1951
Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Missionhurst, Arlington, entrusted with care of St. John’s Church. Rev. Paul R. Cauwe, C.I.C.M., first pastor (1951-1964).
1953
Rectory built.
1954
Construction of the “church in the round” began; St. John’s School opens.
1956
New church dedicated by Richmond Bishop Peter L. Ireton.
1961
St. Luke’s Parish begins, formed out of St. John Parish.
1964
Rev. Henry E. Hammond appointed pastor (1964-1979).
1967
Convent built.
1974
St. John’s comes under the new Diocese of Arlington.
1979
Rev. Frank E. Mahler appointed pastor on June (1979-1986).
1986
Rev. Richard J. Ley appointed pastor (1986-1994).
1994
Rev. Jerome R. Daly appointed pastor (1994-2000).
1997
“Building for the Third Millennium” renovation of church and parish facilities (1997-2001).
2000
Rev. Edward C. Hathaway appointed administrator, then pastor (2000-2005).
2005
Rev. Franklyn M. McAfee appointed pastor (2005-2009).
2009
Rev. Paul D. Scalia appointed administrator, then pastor (2009-2012).
2012
Rev. Christopher J. Pollard appointed administrator, then pastor.
