It’s May!

May flowers!

May Crownings!

Mothers Day!

And all of that adds up to First Holy Communion. With joy and trepidation do I look forward to First Holy Communion. Last year’s Masses for the occasion were a study in stark contrasts. It was also the first and so far only time I have been really angry in our church. Before the Mass that Father Thompson was going to celebrate I tried to lead the congregation in the Holy Rosary. The church was awash in conversation as I approached the sanctuary and even as I explained that the children were in the school praying the Rosary to prepare themselves and that it would be a good idea for us to do likewise. I was confident that everyone would be quiet when I started the Sign of the Cross. Nope. Then I reassured myself that people would chime in when we got to the second half of the Apostles’ Creed. Not even. So I stopped, turned around and explained that there were two options: praying in Church or conversing outside. Because of the trickle of noise coming in from the church lobby I walked up and closed those doors and returned to kneeling at the entrance of the sanctuary. There I waited for one group after another to realize that I was not going to begin the Rosary until the Church was silent. It felt like it took several minutes.

This year we will have one large First Holy Communion Mass. It promises to be gorgeous. I will ask Fr. Thompson to call on his holy friends and ask the Poor Clares to pray for good weather. And I ask you, if you end up being one of the fortunate few in attendance on the morning of Saturday, May 11, to gently remind your neighbors that you would love to visit with them… but that it will have to wait until after Mass because in Church we do one thing: pray.

It will make your mother proud… and your pastor happy.

St. Imelda, pray for us!

St. Peter Martyr, pray for us!

God bless you.
